Paramount has released the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and not only does it provide insight into the plot of the third installment, but it also serves as the first glimpse of the newest and long-rumored member of the cast — Shadow. Oh, and Keanu Reeves speaks in this as Shadow, too.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 arrives in movie theaters on December 20, and sees the return of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, following their efforts to defeat Shadow, who seems to have escaped confinement. Amid the ensuing chaos, Sonic decides that teaming up with a depressed Doctor Robotnik is the best way to reach their goal.

This is, of course, the return of Jim Carrey as Doctor Robotnik, who at one point in the trailer says “if I can’t rule the world, I might as well save it”. But let’s be honest, the big excitement here is Keanu Reeves.

After an incredibly long wait, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 finally has its first trailer, and it's looking like an absolute doozy for fans of the series.

It had been starting to look like Sonic 3 was never going to come out, given that it's out in four months, but Paramount finally dropped a trailer for it today, showing off Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles finally working together as the ever-loveable Team Sonic. And best of all, we finally got our first look at Shadow the Hedgehog in motion - who yes, is in fact voiced by the one and only Keanu Reeves. The film essentially looks to be something of an adaptation of Sonic Adventure 2, though on this occasion Sonic and co are having to team up with Eggman to take on Shadow. Presumably that'll all change come the end of the film, because Shadow has to have his anti-hero arc, but we'll see!

It being a Sonic Adventure 2 adaptation means that yes, Maria is in it, Shadow's best friend, who is also an actual child that gets shot in the original games. The trailer sure does

The first Sonic the Hedgehog movie was surprisingly great (certainly more so than the outright terrible Borderlands or the all too safe Super Mario Bros.), thanks to a genuinely funny script and Jim Carrey going wild as Dr. Robotnik. After introducing Idris Elba's Knuckles in the second film (andhis own Paramount+ TV series), now we're getting Sonic's broody counterpart Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. 

Voiced by Keanu Reeves, who sounds like an angstier John Wick in the trailer, Shadow is introduced as an alien who has lived through tragedy and is out for some unspecified revenge. (His real problem though, as fans of the Fast and Furious franchise will tell you, is his lack of #family.)

Judging from the trailer, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 clearly feels like the third entry in a franchise. Sonic and Knuckles are now frenemies who've banded together, alongside Tails, to form the Sonic Team. But when confronted with Shadow's anger and nihilism, they have no choice but to team up with Robot
