Shelley Duvall,The Shining actress and Robert Altman collaborator, dies at 75

The actress, who struggled with her mental health, made her return to acting in the 2022 horror film "The Forest Hills."

Shelley Duvall, the actress who starred in several Robert Altman films and evaded an ax-swinging Jack Nicholson in Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, has died. She was 75. The actress died in her sleep on July 9 due to complications from diabetes at her home in Blanco, Texas, her partner Dan Gilroy told The Hollywood Reporter. “My dear, sweet, wonderful life partner and friend left us,” he said. “Too much suffering lately, now she’s free. Fly away, beautiful Shelley.” Entertainment Weekly has reached out to representatives for Duvall, but did not immediately hear back. Duvall began her acting career after being discovered by legendary filmmaker Robert Altman, who cast her as the Suzanne in his 1970 film, Brewster McCloud. The pair would go on to work on six more films together: 1971’s McCabe & Mrs. Miller, 1974’s Thieves Like Us, 1975’s Nashville, 1976’s Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull's History Lesson, and 1977’s 3 Women. The latter saw her win the Cannes Film Festival award for Best Actress. Her other credits include The Shining, Annie Hall, Popeye, Time Bandits, Frankenweenie, and The Portrait of a Lady. She announced her retirement in 2002 but reappeared in a 2016 interview with Dr. Phil in which she revealed that she’d been suffering from mental illness. She made her return to acting 20 years later in the indie horror film The Forest Hills. The film’s director, Scott Goldberg, EW in a statement: "Shelley leaves behind an amazing legacy and will be missed by so many people, myself included. I am proud of her for overcoming adversity to act again and will always be forever grateful for her friendship and kindness." This is a breaking story. Please check back for updates.
