FALCONS - SAINTS Matchup Preview
The Falcons are off to their best start since 2016, winners of five of their last six games including a 27-21 victory over the Dallas Cowboys a week ago. Free-agent quarterback Kirk Cousins has led the resurgence, averaging nearly 270 passing yards per game and throwing for 17 touchdowns. Ranked No. 6 in the league in offense, Atlanta boasts a balanced attack that features second-year running back Bijan Robinson, who is on pace for a 1,000-yard season.
The Falcons could roost on Sunday as the Saints’ defense has been inconsistent. The unit surrenders 25 points per game, including a 51 spot to the Bucs in Week 6, and is ranked No. 28 in the league. What’s more, the Saints traded one of their best players, four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Marshon Lattimore, to the Commanders on Tuesday, and are already without cornerback Paulson Adebo (3 interceptions), who is out for the season with a leg injury.
The game will be the debut of interim head coach Darren Rizzi, the special teams coach under Allen. Riddled with injuries on both sides of the ball, the Saints haven’t won a game in nearly two months and could be without wide receiver Chris Olave again after he suffered his second concussion of the season in last week’s loss against the Panthers. In that game, running back Alvin Kamara also turned in his first 100-yard rushing game since Week 2. Quarterback Derek Carr, who missed the previous three games with an oblique injury, threw for 236 yards and a touchdown and no interceptions. But he was also the target of criticism from former teammate Michael Thomas, who ripped Carr for throwing a high ball that landed Olave in the hospital.
“I’ve had so many teammates over the years, and he’s like the one dude that didn’t get along with me,” the Saints quarterback said, regarding Thomas. “I don’t know what I did to him.”
Carr and Co. will face a Falcons defense that’s dead last in the league in sacks with only nine.
