About half of Oregon registered voters have turned in their ballots, reflecting a return to more typical voting patterns in the state after early voting surged in the last presidential election four years ago.

That slowdown in early voting, coupled with the added complexity of Portland’s new ranked-choice voting system, is expected to delay the calling of winners in a number of highly watched races including the fight for Oregon’s 5th Congressional District, Measure 117 on ranked-choice voting and the Portland mayor’s race.

Elections directors in all three of the Portland area’s large counties said they have arranged to have well over 100 temporary workers on hand to help process ballots and tally votes.

It could also take days if not longer for a winner to be declared in the presidential election. Four years ago, the Associated Press did not call the presidential election until the Saturday after the election.

Today is the deadline to mail ballots or drop them in ballot boxes, which will be available until 8 p.m.

In Portland, voters will participate in a historic election, selecting a new mayor and 12 City Council members as the city transitions to a new form of city government.

Oregon voters will also select the next secretary of state, attorney general and state treasurer, and Democrats and Republicans have been waging expensive fights over the handful of highly competitive districts in the state House and Senate. Democrats hope to gain enough seats to achieve supermajorities that would allow them to raise taxes without any Republican support.
